Many America’s Urban Campus Institutions maintain a combination of academic programs and community/neighborhood focused support initiatives designed to engage citizens and organizations in the communities where they are located. These programs provide opportunities for students, faculty and staff to work directly with their neighbors to improve local communities, support health, and engender local economic development.
Five America’s Campus members have been awarded the prestigious Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching: DePaul University, Loyola University Chicago, National Louis University, The Chicago School, and Wilbur Wright College, a Chicago City College. DePaul’s certification was recently renewed for the third time.
One purpose of community engagement is combining the resources and knowledge of colleges and universities with that of the public and private sectors in order to prepare educated, engaged citizens; strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; address critical societal issues; and contribute to the public good.

Improving the lives of all our citizens.
America’s Urban Campus (AUC) colleges and universities are active throughout the City of Chicago, providing programming support to community organizations; leveraging the talents of their students and faculty through internships, clinical practicums, student teaching; undertaking research on urban problems in cooperation with neighborhood groups and foundations, and providing enrichment programs for youth. In early 2020, the member institutions provided details of their programs, represented on the heatmap below. One map shows the extent of the combined institutions across the city and region. Additional maps provide detailed information for each institution. Highlighting each data point with a cursor will provide the information on the program, institution, and address. (Note: because of the COVID-19 pandemic, some of these programs may have been temporarily halted, or moved to a virtual format.)
